quiet

Suddenly awake I lay there in the bed hoping to return to the land of dreams. The quiet permeated the room and not even the dog expressed her usual snore. Giving thanks in those silent moments took me to a place recalling people for whom the promise of prayer had been given over the past week. Thoughts of each individual lingered as I asked God for answers to each person’s prayer. In those moments of silence in the presence of communing with the Creator, there arose a sense of connectedness that brought about a state of peace. Gratitude engulfed me like a cocoon holding its chrysalis that would soon emerge as a different expression from the previous being. Lying there before the dawn, consumed with thankfulness, I recalled the words of the Apostle Paul to the church in Philippi when he said: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

A chill occupies the old farm house as the light of sunrise peeks its way over the eastern hills. Silence permeates except for the occasional moan from the relieved dog now curled tightly around the old shoe left by the sofa last evening. Soon the house will be bustling with the sounds of preparation for the day. As the canine and I sit quietly in the morning glow, I am filled with the wonder of creation and the gift of life that we all experience each day. Some seek to see the gift in life only if challenges do not exist. This pilgrim sees challenges as a part of the gift; a blessing to be unwrapped that brings joy to the giver and meaning to the gifted. May the challenges you face today be unwrapped to discover the gift that waits within.

Quiet consumes the morning chill except for the occasional scamper by the pet rabbit. The stillness gives way to fleeting recollections of days gone by and anticipation of those to come. Putting what has been and what might be aside, this boomer focuses intently upon the moment, giving thanks for the safe harbor that is now and the refuge from discomfort that visits more often than in times gone by. As the day unfolds, this mind chooses to face each moment with a heart full of gratitude for the grace that has and will continue to be the victor of this life.
